Power, Performance, and Precision: Aspocomp’s Expertise in IMS Technology

In a world increasingly driven by efficiency, thermal management in electronics has never been more critical. For Aspocomp, IMS (Insulated Metal Substrate) technology is not just a product category; it’s an area of long-term expertise and strategic value. With decades of experience, a strong supplier network, and a commitment to solving complex customer challenges, Aspocomp delivers IMS solutions that balance cost-efficiency with reliability, even in the most demanding environments.

What is IMS Technology?

IMS boards are typically single-layer circuit boards made of a thermally conductive dielectric layer bonded to a metal base, usually aluminium. They are widely used in LED lighting, power supply units, and heavy machinery due to their excellent heat dissipation. While IMS technology itself is well-established, executing it reliably at scale and cost-effectively is where Aspocomp stands out.

“Our IMS boards are often used in high-power LED lighting and off-road heavy-duty vehicle systems,” explains Marianne Kittilä, Sales Manager at Aspocomp. “Because these boards dissipate heat efficiently, they extend component life and improve reliability in critical applications.”

Solving Real-World Challenges

Aspocomp supports customers throughout the lifecycle of their IMS projects, from technical guidance to logistics and warehousing. With a high share of off-road and industrial customers, heat management is often mission critical.

One key advantage lies in Aspocomp’s ability to offer customers more than just standard aluminium solutions. “We don’t just ship a board. We help solve the thermal challenge,” says Marianne. “In some cases, an IMS board isn’t even the best fit. Because we also manufacture advanced multilayer PCBs with thermal vias and other design techniques, we can suggest alternative approaches when needed.”

From Prototype to Volume

Most IMS boards are manufactured through Aspocomp’s long-standing partners in China. However, when design flexibility or technical fine-tuning is needed, prototypes or low-volume alternatives may be produced in Oulu using other technologies.

“We always look at the entire life cycle of the product,” Marianne says.

Thanks to a close collaboration between Aspocomp’s teams in Finland and China, the process is fast and reliable. Combined with a focused, long-term supplier base in Asia, Aspocomp offers stable production and minimised risk.

Efficient Logistics and Inventory Services

As volumes increase, so do logistics challenges. IMS boards are significantly heavier than standard PCBs, which makes freight and handling a key cost driver. To help manage these costs, Aspocomp offers tailored warehousing and buffer stock services in Europe.

“By managing inventory close to the customer, we reduce freight costs and improve responsiveness,” says Marianne. “It’s all about reducing lead times and helping our customers meet their own delivery promises.”

Competitive Edge Through Flexibility and Experience

What sets Aspocomp apart? According to Marianne, it’s not just about IMS as a product category but how Aspocomp supports its customers end to end.

“Our team knows the technology, but we also know the people behind the projects. Customers value the fact that they have named contacts who really understand their needs and who stay with them year after year.”

Aspocomp’s operations are built on over 45 years of manufacturing experience, combining local expertise with a global perspective. This dual advantage allows Aspocomp to offer unique benefits that meet the demands of today’s dynamic industries. Its lean structure, close-knit teams, and established supplier relationships allow for rapid communication and proactive problem-solving.

Room to Grow

IMS volumes are growing, especially in automotive lighting, heavy vehicles, and infrastructure. While most of Aspocomp’s current IMS business is in Finland, the company sees clear potential in expanding to Central Europe and the UK, where customers increasingly value trusted production partners.

“We already have the expertise, the network, and the track record. Now it’s about making sure more customers know we can help them,” Marianne concludes.
